Context
The catalogue showcases the outcomes of an international research project into the preservation of Korean paintings. Case studies and essays demonstrate the skills and knowledge that were developed in the process.
Audience
The research team distributed the copies to the specialists who were involved in the project, the project funder, and museums and universities in Korea and internationally. They also present the publication to institutions, corporations and individuals as part of future bids for funding.
Challenge
To demonstrate the impact of the project, the catalogue had to present the content in an engaging way that reflected the subject matter and would be easy to follow also specialists and non-specialists alike.
Solution
I developed a graphic system based on the strong vertical columns and the colour palette of indigoes present in Korean scrolls and screens. Set over nine columns, it adapts to the different types of content in a flexible way.
The choice of paper and the textural finish of the cover reflect the materials used in Korean painting.
